Protecting Your Eyes

Vision is our most dominant and relied upon sense to give us information about our world. 80% of what we learn and experience comes through our eyes.  It is extremely important to protect them because our everyday life can become very challenging without it.  Professional eye exams can ensure adequate protection from the difficulties everyday life presents to our eyes.

Eye Strain

In our modern, space age world of electronics, we are asking our eyes to perform in ways they can find very difficult.  Our eyes do not like to spend prolonged periods of time looking at computers, smart phones and tablets.  It is very important to take breaks from these tasks to maintain clear, comfortable and stress free vision.  The 20/20/20 rule is a good adage to help us remember when to take breaks from our near work.  Every 20 minutes look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Environmental Damage:

It is easy for eyes to become damaged by wind, dust, air pollution, and other small particles in the air. Eye drops or safety glasses can protect your eyes from damage. Contact lens wearers should be diligent in protecting their eyes from wind and dust and use re-wetting drops when needed to maintain hydration.  If your eyes become uncomfortable, your eye doctor can make treatment recommendation specific for your needs.

Sun Protection

Everyone knows that UV rays cause damage to your skin, but UV exposure damages your eye tissue as well?  Prolonged exposure to UV rays may increase your risk of macular degeneration, cataracts, and other eye conditions that affect your vision.  Sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays are important for good eye health.  Fancy designers and expensive frames do not always mean better UV coverage.  UV damage can occur year-round, not just in the summer and can be especially bad during the wintertime when sunlight reflects off of ice and snow.

Safety Glasses

In general, it is always best to avoid taking chances with your eyes.  Proper protection when heading outside, playing sports, and working with dangerous tools or chemicals is always a good call.  Good eye safety can ensure your eyes will serve you well throughout your lifetime.
